The base down the road
A little before one on Sunday morning, police in Gloucestershire got reports of three vehicles heading for RAF Fairford. The United States has been flying bombers out of that base since March. By dawn five men were under arrest, the Army's bomb disposal team was looking at the vehicles, and about eighty-five households in a village called Whelford had been woken up and told to leave. By lunchtime a good share of the internet was sure who had sent them, though the police had named nobody.
One · What happened
Three vehicles, five men, a cordon
Gloucestershire Constabulary said it received the reports at about 00:45 on Sunday. Armed officers arrested five men in the Whelford area on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. A four-hundred-metre cordon went up around the vehicles while Army explosive ordnance specialists examined them. Roughly eighty-five households were asked to leave as a precaution. A leisure centre was opened for anybody who had nowhere else to go.
Counter Terrorism Policing took over the investigation later in the day. In an update on Monday it said all five were London residents between twenty-three and twenty-five, and police have said the arrests also relate to suspected preparation of a terrorist act. Police have not said who, if anyone, was directing them. The base itself is used by the United States Air Force. It has hosted American bombers since March, and reporters have tied it to the war with Iran. That connection is why so many people drew the line they drew.
What the police have said, as of Monday
- 00:45
- Sunday, when reports came in of three suspicious vehicles heading for RAF Fairford.
- 5
- Men arrested near Whelford, all London residents aged 23 to 25, per Counter Terrorism Policing.
- 400 m
- The cordon around the vehicles while Army bomb disposal examined them.
- ~85
- Households told to evacuate as a precaution, per Gloucestershire Constabulary.
- 0
- Foreign governments named by police as behind it.
A lot of what circulated on Sunday was ahead of those facts. Some of it may turn out true. It had not been established when people started sharing it as settled.
Two · What it is doing
A knock at one in the morning, and a flood of certainty
Put yourself in Whelford for a minute. A police officer is at the door in the middle of the night saying get the kids in the car and go. You do not know why yet. You find out later it was about the base you drive past every day, the one you have gotten used to hearing. It is a particular fear, finding out your ordinary road was on somebody's map.
Plenty of American readers know that feeling from the other side of the ocean. If you live near Barksdale or Whiteman or the naval air station down the road, news like this lands close. For a day or two you look at the fence line differently. You wonder what is in the trucks that go past your house.
Roughly eighty-five households near RAF Fairford were told to evacuate as a precaution early Sunday.
Then there is the second thing, which most of us actually did. We read a headline. A post under it said who was behind the attack, and we believed the post. Some of us passed it on. It fit what we already thought about the war and who is fighting it. By Sunday night there were confident accounts of the plot circulating that no police statement supported. We wanted a name. The facts did not have one yet, so a lot of us took the rumor's.
Three · Where the ground is
Do not call conspiracy what they call conspiracy
Isaiah was living through a real military threat, the Assyrian army moving on Judah, when God told him in Isaiah 8:12 and 13, Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. The threat was real. Assyria was coming. God still told Isaiah to stop taking his cues from the panic around him and to fear the right One.
I think that is exactly the instruction for a Sunday like this one. There may well be a foreign hand in this. The police are looking. But a believer is not supposed to run ahead of the facts because fear wants an answer by lunchtime. The people who passed along the confident version were mostly frightened. God's word to frightened people in Isaiah 8 is to fear Him, and to leave the conspiracy-mongering to everyone else.
A false report
Exodus 23:1 is short. You shall not spread a false report. Most of us would never knowingly make one up. But sharing something you have not checked, about real people, that later turns out wrong, is still spreading it. Five young men are under investigation. Whatever they did or did not do, a lot of people on Sunday assigned them motives and masters that the police have not assigned them, and named a country as their sponsor. If you were one of them, that is worth a quiet word with the Lord.
You alone make me dwell in safety
For the families who live near a fence line, Psalm 4:8 says, In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. David wrote that while people were speaking against him and plenty of them wanted him gone. Danger was close enough to touch. He lay down anyway, with the Lord as the only safety he claimed. Nobody can promise the family in Whelford that nothing will ever happen again. Scripture does not either. What it gives them is a psalm to say before they turn out the light, and a Lord who does not need them to keep watch.
Where this page stops
Something near a base, or anywhere else, that looks wrong gets a call to the police first, with a plain description. Do not post about it first. And if the fear from a story like this has settled into your chest and will not leave for weeks, let a doctor look at you before you decide it is only spiritual.
Four · Today
Five things, and none of them are “stay informed”
Investigators will take weeks on this. Two of these are about what you pass along, and the rest about who you trust at night.
- 01
Take down anything you shared that the police have not said.
If you passed on a name, a country, or a plot on Sunday, check it against what investigators have actually stated. If it is not there, delete it.
- 02
Pray for the people of Whelford.
Eighty-some households woken in the night and sent out with their kids. Ask the Lord to give them good sleep this week, and thank Him for the police and the bomb disposal soldiers who walked toward those vehicles.
- 03
The five men need praying for too.
They are in the hands of the courts, and justice is the courts' business. Their souls are another matter, and each of them is somebody's son.
- 04
If you live near a base, go meet a military family at church.
They live with this on a different level from the rest of us. Have them over for supper. Ask how the deployments are going, and ask how you can pray.
- 05
Read Psalm 4 to your family at bedtime.
Just the psalm, all eight verses, and then turn out the light. Let the last line be the last thing your kids hear.
